A method to reduce the plugging risk in application of ZIF-8 slurry for energy conservative carbon capture

摘要:The hybrid absorption-adsorption method using ZIF-8 based slurries enables to provide a new approach to high-efficient and energy-conservative carbon capture. However, the possible precipitation of solid ZIF-8 particles may bring plugging risk in industrial applications of this slurry method. Herein, we propose a method to lower this risk, in which the slurry could be converted into transparent liquid without plugging risk when absorbing CO2 via adding enough 2-methylimidazole to ZIF-8/water slurry. On the other side, the uniform slurry could be regenerated after desorbing CO2. By this reversible solid dissolution–recrystallization process during CO2 absorbing-desorbing cycle, the plugging risk in the whole carbon capture process is dramatically reduced. More encouragingly, the regenerated ZIF-8 slurry keeps high CO2 capture ability (up to 1.62 mol·L-1 at 303.15 K and 0.1 MPa), low desorption heat (35 kJ·mol?1 or so), and high selectivity (457, 3543 and 653 over methane, nitrogen, hydrogen, respectively), with a regeneration energy of 2.01 GJ·ton-1 CO2, far reducing the energy cost as compared with that of alcohol amine solutions, and thereby making industrial scale carbon capture more cost-effective and available.
