A new brittleness prediction method based on quantitative interpretation using statistic rock physics

摘要:Brittleness of shale-gas reservoir is an important property for hydraulic fracturing. The brittleness of shale is usually evaluated based on two common criteria: (1) the clay content and (2) the elastic modules, such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. The former relates to the mineralogy of shale, while the latter is determined by not only the elastic properties of single minerals, but also the microstructure and pore-fluid properties of shales. Therefore, two criteria provide different result in the interpretation of brittleness. In this paper, two criteria are examined to show their similarities and differences. Then a new brittleness prediction method is proposed by the combination of two criteria based on the quantitative interpretation using statistic rock physics. This method is demonstrated by the application to an Upper Triassic shale formation in Sichuan basin. Compared with the brittleness index directly estimated from the prestack seismic inversion, the new method provides explicit brittleness variation even for same lithology thus effectively reduces the non-uniqueness of the brittleness prediction. © 2016 SEG.
