Mechanistic modeling and experimental study of multistage plunger lift for liquid unloading in ultra-deep gas well

摘要:As deep natural gas resources develop, conventional plunger lift are often inadequate due to their high startup pressure, significant leakage, and frequent lift failures. For gas wells with a great burial depth, slow pressure recovery during the buildup stage, and low gas-liquid ratio (GLR), the multistage plunger lift can more effectively deliquification, reduce startup pressure, and enhance lifting efficiency. Currently, the application of multistage plunger lift in the field is limited and experimental, with no theoretical research reported on this subject. The operational mechanism and process adaptability of multistage plunger lift remain unclear, and existing dynamic simulation software cannot model their operational processes. This study develops a transient model for multistage plunger lift based on their operational mechanism, considering plunger force balance, dynamic reservoir inflow, liquid leakage and gas migration during plunger movement, and interaction forces between dual plungers. Simultaneously, sensitivity and adaptability analyses were conducted based on the established model to determine the optimal operating conditions for the multistage plunger. Additionally, a full-scale visual plunger lift experimental setup was constructed to compare the lifting efficiencies of conventional and multistage plunger lift and to investigate the operational conditions of multistage plunger lift at different liquid heights. The findings indicate that, for ultra-deep gas wells, multistage plunger lift can effectively reduce startup pressure and, under certain conditions, outperform conventional plunger lift in gas well deliquification. ? 2025 Elsevier B.V.
