Preparation and performance evaluation of a thixotropic polymer gel for loss circulation control
摘要:Gel-based plugging materials have become commonplace in addressing lost circulation wells. However, traditional gels are associated with challenges such as difficulties in injection, irreversible structural damage under high shear stress, poor retention capacity within leakage channels, resulting in diminished pressure-bearing capabilities, subpar sealing efficacy, and prolonged non-production periods. In this study, a plugging gel, denoted as YSL, was synthesized via free-radical aqueous solution polymerization using AM, hydrophobic monomer SMA, and TA as raw materials, with KA and LAP as inorganic additives. The physicochemical properties were characterized using FT-IR, TGA, and SEM. Additionally, the rheological properties, thixotropic behavior, viscoelasticity, adhesion performance, and plugging performance of the YSL gel were systematically investigated. The results indicate that increasing the hydrophobic monomer and inorganic clay particles can enhance the viscosity, thixotropic ability, and storage modulus of the gel, although excessive non-covalent interactions diminish the adhesion capability of TA in the gel. Compared to commercial polymer gels and bridging plugging materials, YSL exhibits superior pressure-bearing plugging capability. Additionally, plugging mechanism of the gel in leakage channels was analyzed.
