摘要：The polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits have gained increasing favor since 1976. In order to further improve the ROP, the single PDC cutter tests were widely used. During these experiments, the cutting force is an important index to identify the efficiency of rock breaking. However, only the average value of cutting force was calculated in the previous researches. The variation trend of cutting force was not emphasized, which could reflect the process of rock failure to a large extent. In this study, a novel method to calculate the cutting force was used. At first, all the peak and valley values in the cutting force were picked out. With these points, the cutting force curves were separated into two parts: 1) rock loading process and 2) rock failure process. Then, the cutting force difference (▵F), variation time (▵t) and changing rate of cutting force (Ra) under different conditions were analyzed. Besides, we also calculated the changing rate of Ra with ▵F (SlRa). The results show that the variation trend of cutting force has a close relationship with the rock failure mode. That is, the above values at different cutting depth show significantly different characteristics in the unloading process of cutting force, which corresponding to the compression or the brittle failure of the rock, respectively. And the loading of cutting force is a stable process all the time. The results of this study are expected to introduce a new research perspective for the investigation of rock failure mode and working pattern of PDC cutters.
