Visualized experiments on the hydrogen transports and bubble ripening mechanism in porous reservoir of underground hydrogen storage
摘要:The porous reservoir rocks served as the primary storage space for hydrogen and the main migration channels during the injection and extraction processes. Better understanding the migration mechanisms of H2 in these pores was crucial for improving injection and extraction efficiency of underground hydrogen storage (UHS). The visualized seepage experiment under controlled confining and axial pressure was conducted using micro-CT and self-developed core holder. The multiple-cycling injection and extraction of hydrogen (H2) or nitrogen (N2) in water-saturated samples of 3D printed (3DP) rock and natural sandstone from the underground gas storage (UGS) in China were tested to investigate the migration mechanisms of H2 in UHS compared to N2, as well as the influencing factors. The results indicated that: 1) The in-situ contact angles distribution of H2 and N2 in 3DP samples was mixed-wetted, while that in natural samples was water-wetted. The contact angles distributions of H2 and N2 were similar in the same sample, showing the potentials of N2 replacing H2 in wettability tests for safety considerations. 2) Under the same injection and extraction conditions in the same reservoir, the effective storage volume for H2 was smaller than that for N2. 3) A significant redistribution of H2 was observed after 12 h storage, with a decrease in the number of small bubbles and an increase in both the number and size of large bubbles, while no obvious redistribution was observed for N2. 4) The Ostwald ripening process of the H2 bubbles in the pores was analyzed quantitatively using visualized experimental results, which agreed well with the theoretical calculations. The reason was that the small bubbles reduced their total free energy through coarsening, transferring mass via molecular diffusion to the larger bubbles with lower free energy. This study aimed to provide new technologies and tools for investigating the multiphase and multicomponent fluid migration mechanisms in porous reservoirs for UHS. ? 2025 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC
