Application of CPFD method in simulation of an industrial MTO regenerator

摘要:A regenerator is a critical component of an industrial Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO) unit, whose primary function is to recover the catalyst activity by burning off the deposited coke accumulated on catalyst particles within a fluidized bed. This study simulated an industrial MTO regenerator using an Eulerian-Lagrangian Multi-Phase Particle-In-Cell (MP-PIC) model. The simulation considered all the essential internals within the regenerator. Most model parameters, including boundary conditions and the physical properties of gas and solids, were based on industrial data. The simulated bed densities, temperatures, and flue gas composition agreed well with the corresponding industrial data. A wide distribution range of coke content was found in the regenerated MTO catalysts, which includes a considerable proportion of catalyst with excessive coke burning (CC C > 4 wt%). Such a distribution is detrimental to a desired product yield of the MTO process, which is primarily attributed to the wide residence time distribution (RTD) of catalyst particles in the regenerator. Within the MTO regenerator, the coke burning intensity (CBI) was found to be highly axial uneven, with the majority of coke burned in the region near the bottom perforated gas distributor. Due to the arrangement of internals in the dense bed, uneven radial distributions of solid holdup, temperature, and CBI were found in the dense bed of the regenerator. These findings can promote a deeper understanding of the operation of the MTO regenerator and provide useful guidance for its future design optimization. ? 2025 Elsevier B.V.
