Development of a new pre-packed sand-retaining cell
摘要:Sand retaining media plugging in sand control wells has become a common and urgent problem in the oil and gas industry. However, no unified analysis or agreed industry standards on sand retaining media have been reported recently. This study presents new pre-packed sand retaining media to overcome several limitations in existing plugging tests for sand retaining media. The advantages of the new sand retaining media plugging cell are incorporated to: I) the measurements of fluid pressures that are near the base pipe surface and the internal and external surfaces of sand control screens to allow in situ measurement of the sand retaining media drop pressure; ii) delivering a uniform sand slurry over the entire screen surface, thereby ensuring the retention of uniform solid particles over sand control screens by placing a small mixing instrument inside the cell; iii) the weight of produced sand from sand retaining media is measured; iv) the law of sand retention on the sand control screen is analyzed by using an electron microscope(EM)and a scanning electron microscope (SEM); and v) a transparent cell body that allows sand retaining media plugging and fine migration through pre-pack gravel observed. Parameters, such as gravel thickness, filling rate of gravel layer, flow velocity, and particle size distribution of solid particles in the sand slurry should be quantified during the test. In particular, the cell can be used to quantitatively and systematically analyze the clogging process of sand retaining media, which can aid sand control workers in clearly analyzing the plugging mechanism of the sand retaining media and providing considerable technical guidance for developing unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs.
