Study on the calculation of heat-affected zone width in girth weld of large-scale X80M pipeline

摘要:The width of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in girth weld is a critical parameter influencing the structural integrity and service performance of high-strength, large-scale steel pipelines. This study presents a novel thermo-mass-fluid-solid coupled numerical model to simulate the complex multi-layer, multi-pass welding process of X80M pipeline steel (OD1219-22 mm). The model uniquely incorporates droplet transfer dynamics, molten pool behavior, and phase transformation during solidification, enabling accurate prediction of transient thermal cycles within the groove region. HAZ boundary is quantitatively defined based on the temperature interval between the liquidus line (1759 K) and the Ac1 transformation point (984 K). Experimental validation is performed via metallographic analysis and hardness testing across the weld cross-section. Simulation results reveal that the HAZ width varies from 1.044 mm to 1.971 mm, with a slight increase observed in the second layer when applying the dual-torch process. The model predictions exhibit strong agreement with experimental data, with relative deviations within 17 %. These findings offer a reliable framework for assessing HAZ dimensional evolution and optimizing welding strategies in large-scale pipeline applications. ? 2025 Elsevier Ltd
