Experimental study on hydro-shearing propagation of an embedded fracture in hot dry granite rock
摘要:Hydro-shearing fracturing has become a standard stimulation technique by activating preexisting fractures for hot dry rock. Shear slip and dilation of pre-existing fractures are two primary propagation behaviors and enhance the fracture permeability and heat transfer. In this paper, we conducted a more realistic lab-scale experiment of hydro-shearing stimulation. Cool water was injected into an embedded rough fracture under in-situ confining pressure and temperature. We measured the injection flow rate and pressure, axial loading, and displacement in axial and radial in real time. The characteristics of fracture shear slip were obtained involving changes of slip distance, effective normal stress, shear stress, and water injection pressure with time. Experimental results show that fracture shear slip behaviors of hydro-shearing stimulation contains four stages: fracture initiation, slip weakening, stable sliding, and deceleration slip. The stable sliding is a dominant contributor to the total slip distance. Fracture initiation mode appears to be either tensile opening or shear slipping. Stick-slip and steady sliding are two possible shear slip behaviors. High Colombia ratio promotes to be tensile opening. The ultimate slip distance presents a positive correlation with the reduction of effective normal stress. This work provides more insights to understand the mechanics of hydro-shearing behaviors and primary influence factors.
