Glacial snow and ice Contribute Differentially to the dissolved organic matter in the runoff of Qiangyong Glacier, Tibetan Plateau

摘要:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in glaciers is a highly complex organic mixture and potentially impacts downstream ecosystems and regional carbon cycling through glacier melting and transport. However, the mechanisms behind the temporal variation in the DOM molecular composition of glacier-derived DOM and its impact on downstream ecosystems remain unclear. Using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry, we analyzed the spatial and temporal molecular composition of DOM in ice, snow, and runoff from the Qiangyong Glacier on the Tibetan Plateau. Our results revealed that DOM composition in ice and snow was primarily influenced by in-situ microbial communities, with distinct communities driving DOM transformation in each environment. Co-occurrence network analysis identified autochthonous Cyanobacteria as the main contributors to DOM transformation in snow, whereas heterotrophic taxa, including Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidia, played critical roles in ice. In contrast, the DOM composition in glacier runoff was mainly affected by ice and snow. April-snow-derived DOM accounted for 82%–96% of the DOM molecules in the runoff from May to September. However, the contribution of July-ice-derived DOM increased between 50% and 65%, surpassing that of snow-derived DOM, which ranged from 25% to 45% from July to September. These findings reveal that glaciers act as natural filters, transforming DOM into more refractory molecules which are then exported to shape downstream ecological dynamics.
