Prediction of refined oil spill trajectories in mountainous terrain using a workflow combining smoothed particle hydrodynamics and digital elevation models

摘要:Refined oil pipelines crossing mountainous regions face elevated risks of rupture and spill, particularly in rugged terrains with steep slopes and frequent natural hazards. To improve the prediction of spill spread under such conditions, this study presents an integrated simulation framework combining Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) with Digital Elevation Modeling (DEM). The mesh-free SPH method enables efficient modeling of free-surface flows over complex terrain, while DEM provides high-resolution topographic input reflecting real geographic features. The proposed model incorporates critical environmental factors including slope gradients, vegetation-induced surface roughness, and oil-soil adsorption. A series of numerical experiments investigate how terrain, flow rate, leakage orientation, and initial velocity influence spill dynamics. Validation against published laboratory data demonstrates that the model reliably reproduces fluid spreading behavior. Compared to conventional computational fluid dynamics approaches, this SPH-DEM framework for emergency response modeling reduces simulation time from several hours to under 5 min, making it well-suited for rapid scenario analysis and emergency response support. Results show that terrain geometry strongly dictates spill pathways, while higher flow rates and initial velocities significantly expand the affected area. These findings provide a practical tool for spill risk assessment in mountainous regions and contribute to more effective pipeline safety management and mitigation planning. ? 2025 Author(s).
