Influence of laminae on mechanical properties and its implications for hydraulic fracturing of shale oil reservoirs

摘要:Yingxiongling shale oil reservoirs have thick vertical layers with high-frequency cyclic sedimentary characteristics. The evoluted layered and laminated shale has complex lithology and strong heterogeneity, making it difficult to identify the sweet spots. In this study, the laminated shale and layered shale of the Ganchaigou formation in Yingxiongling area were examined via rock mechanical experiments, the analysis of on-site microseismic monitoring and construction curves of hydraulic fracturing, aiming at how laminae can affect shale?s mechanical properties and fracture propagation. The results show that, compared to the layered shale, natural microcracks in the laminated shale are more developed in the formation, and its compressive strength is lower. Since the crack aperture formed in the laminated shale is small, the crack volumetric strain of the laminated shale generated after failure is smaller than that of the layered shale, which is consistent with the results of no significant pressure drop on the on-site fracturing construction curve. Fractures within the laminated shale tend to propagate along the lamination structure, leading to the formation of a more complex fracture network. The laminated shale has a large number of cracks with high complexity, which can make fast oil breakthrough. Therefore, the laminated shale is recommended as better engineering sweet spots in Yingxiongling area. Based on the results, a composite fracturing technique is proposed that involves the use of "gelatinous proppant fluid + slickwater" for the laminated shale. The initial injection of the high-viscosity gelatinous proppant fluid can create small-scale fractures in the laminations, then the slickwater is used to facilitate the expansion of the complex fracture network. ? 2025 University of Petroleum, China.
