Emotional regulation in interpreters revealed by frontal asymmetry of alpha activity
摘要:Emotion regulation as a major part of Emotion Intelligence (EI) has been found relevant to interpreters' competence. In neurocognitive studies, the frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) is a significant bio-marker closely linked to emotion regulation. The current study recorded 19 interpreters' EEG signals in emotion regulation while completing consecutive interpreting tasks and investigated their FAA at high and low levels of language difficulty. The results show that interpreters' emotions respond to the stress factor of language difficulty, and that while input (listening) FAA was correlated with output (interpreting) FAA, output FAA is significantly positively correlated to the performance of an interpreter. Taken together, these findings offer neurophysiological evidence to the importance of emotion regulation in interpretation.
